When your personal life just goes wrong…

Life can go wrong… This i’m afraid, is an undeniable fact. It might happen that one day you think your life is good, you have everything you actually need, and you give that stability for granted, and then something happens in your personal life, something that you didn’t expected or ever thought could happen and there you are, in the middle of some emotional break down, thinking, how could this go so wrong? The worst is when that thing that happened wasn’t even your fault or in your control, you feel your life falling apart for reasons you don’t quite understand.

When things go wrong, you are concerned not only for your crashed life, but also for your work.. Because, of course, you are a breathing human being with expenses, and responsibilities, and you probably will need your job (and money) more than ever when your personal life falls apart, usually this two are tied together. But how can you focus in your work when you have a major problem going on in your life?

If you’re in this situation, it’s time you put in use your emotional intelligence. It’s easy to start making crazy decisions when you are stressed, depressed, or under pressure. But as hard as it can be, try to think in long term, and make decisions accordingly. Acting by impulses can make more damage that whatever situation you are in. Even if you are not confortable telling your superiors the problem you had, it’s good to explain what’s going on, this will help people around you to understand your situation, behavior, and maybe you could get some time to put your life in order. You don’t need to expect best-friends reactions from your superiors, but you may find the empathy you so much need. Your personal life is important, but if you need some off time from work, do it properly! Remember that emotional intelligence is as important as your intelectual intelligence.

In rough times, try to be surrounded by loved ones, Love is a wonderful thing, you’ll see that everything passes and you’ll be back on your feet in no time.

On the other hand, if you are in charge of a team, and someone on your team is going on through a rough situation, have empathy! Remember you’re also a human being which is not exempt of going through a bad situation on it’s own. You have no idea how much you can help someone by just understanding that this person is not on it’s best right now, but soon, when she or he gets back on his feet, its going to be 100% committed with the job, not only because this person needs it, but also because it found in the company the support needed in bad situations, this actually generates loyalty. Kudos for you if you are the type of boss that gives support to your team in good and bad times!
